In a recent case report by Winters et al. (2025), a 17-year-old girl with active Crohn's disease experienced myositis, a muscle inflammation, while being treated with ustekinumab. She had symptoms like jaw swelling, eyelid swelling, blurred vision, and double vision. Imaging tests showed inflammation in her jaw muscles and blood clots in her eye vein and a brain sinus. Her symptoms improved after she stopped the ustekinumab treatment and started on corticosteroids and a blood thinner called enoxaparine.

This case is only the second of its kind reported in the literature, making it a significant contribution to medical knowledge. The exact cause of the myositis is unclear, as it could be due to the Crohn's disease itself or the ustekinumab treatment. The case emphasizes the importance of healthcare professionals sharing their experiences with rare complications, which can help improve understanding and treatment for future patients.
