In a study by Kasser et al. (2025), researchers found that patients with myositis who had cardiac involvement at diagnosis were more likely to experience cardiovascular events (CVEs) than those without. The retrospective cohort study included 78 patients, with 15% showing cardiac involvement at the start. During follow-up, 19% of the patients had a CVE. Those with initial cardiac involvement had a 50% chance of a CVE compared to 14% for those without, a statistically significant difference (p=0.01). Moreover, the median time to a CVE was significantly shorter for patients with cardiac involvement, occurring in just 9 months compared to 84 months for others (p<0.01). The findings suggest that close monitoring is crucial for myositis patients with early signs of heart issues, especially in the first few months after diagnosis. This could potentially help in managing the risk of CVEs in this patient group.
